On Wednesday, August 28th, a significant meeting took place between Te Kura Maaori o Pukekohekohe and the Board of Trustees at Papakura High School. The goal was to seek the board’s approval to enter into a satellite unit agreement, a crucial step following the unexpected withdrawal of support from Te Kura Maaori o Ngaa Tapuwae and Ngaa Kura aa Iwi o Aotearoa. This meeting was a chance for Te Kura Maaori o Pukekohekohe to present its journey, the challenges faced, and the unwavering commitment to the establishment of the new kura.

The atmosphere was charged with passion and determination as representatives from Te Kura Maaori o Pukekohekohe, including kaumaatua, kuia, parents, kaiako, and future students, gathered to make their case. Each speaker conveyed the depth of their commitment, with Tony Kake, a board member, making a particularly impactful contribution. Tony proposed a meaningful change to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), suggesting the use of the term "Rangapuu" in place of the existing "Kura-Matua / Tuakana-Teina" terminology. This change emphasises collaboration and unity in leadership, reinforcing the partnership needed to achieve shared goals between the two institutions.

The meeting was both positive and constructive, though not without its challenges. The Board of Trustees raised important questions about the significant risks involved for Papakura High School. These concerns were addressed with transparency and a shared understanding of the commitment required to move forward.

For the whaanau who attended, the meeting was a powerful affirmation of their efforts. They left feeling encouraged and hopeful as the board deliberated on the decision. Shortly after, a call was received from Papakura High School’s tumuaki, Simon Craggs, delivering the news that the board had given its unreserved support for the establishment of Te Kura Maaori o Pukekohekohe.

This approval marks a significant milestone in our journey. The path forward remains challenging, but the unity and resilience displayed at this meeting are testament to the strength of our vision. The journey continues, with the partnership between Te Kura Maaori o Pukekohekohe and Papakura High School now firmly established, moving us one step closer to realising our dream.
