We are excited to share that matua Shane Aramoana and whaaea Wairua Potini recently facilitated an engaging and insightful workshop focused on developing a framework for marau aa-kura. This marks the beginning of Phase One in our journey to create a comprehensive and culturally responsive curriculum framework for Te Kura Maaori o Pukekohekohe.

The Importance of Marau aa-Kura

Marau aa-kura, or school-based curriculum, is an essential component in ensuring that our educational practices are firmly rooted in the values, knowledge, and traditions of our Maaori communities. By integrating marau aa-kura, we aim to provide our students with a learning experience that is both academically enriching and culturally affirming.

Moving Forward: Further Discussions and Framework Development

While the workshop was a significant first step, it is clear that further discussions are necessary to refine and complete the framework. Collaboration and continuous dialogue will be key in developing a curriculum that truly reflects our collective aspirations and the needs of our tamariki.

Recommendation: Establishing a Kaahui Kaumaatua

One of the key recommendations from the workshop is to establish a Kaahui Kaumaatua, a council of respected elders, to guide and assist in this process. This council would include representatives from Ngaa Hau e Whaa, Ngaati Tamaoho, Vince Hapi, and other esteemed leaders within our community. Their wisdom and experience will be invaluable in ensuring that our marau aa-kura framework is deeply rooted in tikanga Maaori and reflects the diverse voices within our iwi.
