This week has been a momentous one for Te Taamatatanga o Pukekohekohe, marked by significant milestones that highlight the kura’s growth, connection to history, and commitment to cultural excellence.
Welcoming Our New Aakonga
The week began with great excitement as 17 new aakonga and their whaanau were welcomed into the kura whaanau. This milestone marks an important step in the development of our kura, as we continue to grow and build a strong foundation for future generations.
Journey to Waitangi
On Wednesday, our kura embarked on a powerful haerenga to Waitangi, visiting the sacred whenua where our tuupuna discussed and signed Te Tiriti o Waitangi. This trip provided an invaluable opportunity for our aakonga to connect deeply with our nation’s history and reflect on the significance of the Treaty in shaping the future of Aotearoa.
A Generous Koha – A Kura Van
Friday brought incredible news from Tumuaki Simon Craggs – Te Taamatatanga o Pukekohekohe has received a kura van to transport our aakonga to and from school from Port Waikato (Tuakau). The van was picked up on Saturday, ensuring that transport is no longer a barrier for whaanau and aakonga. This generous support will make a profound difference for our kura, and we extend our deepest gratitude to Simon and the Papakura High School Board of Trustees for this invaluable tautoko.
First Kura Kapa Haka Practice – A Step Towards Polyfest 2025
The week concluded on a high note with the first kapa haka practice for the kura. This marks the beginning of an exciting joint venture between Pukekohe North School, Wesley College, and Te Taamatatanga o Pukekohekohe, preparing to perform together at Polyfest 2025. Guided by kapa haka experts Whaaea Pikiteora Mura-Hita, Whaaea Atarangi Cook, and Whaaea Wairua Potini, this inaugural practice was an inspiring start for the 30 students who attended. More students are expected to join as confidence and enthusiasm build within the group.
Lead kapa haka kaiako, Whaaea Pikiteora, shared: "For the first practice, the overall effort was very good, and we are incredibly proud of the aakonga. This is just the beginning, and there is a lot of work ahead." She emphasised the need for fundraising and sponsorships to support the kapa haka journey, highlighting the challenges of acquiring kakahu, resources, and equipment. The call is out to our wider community to help meet these needs.
The waananga was filled with incredible energy, supported by dedicated parents who ensured that our aakonga remained nourished throughout the day. The highlight was the undeniable spirit of kotahitanga, uniting everyone in a shared vision and purpose.
As we reflect on this remarkable week, we acknowledge the dedication and passion of our kura whaanau. With unity, determination, and community support, Te Taamatatanga o Pukekohekohe continues to thrive and pave the way for future generations.
Ngaa mihi nui ki a koutou katoa!
